About Arkansas State University

Arkansas State University enjoys a reputation as an excellent institution of higher education serving citizens throughout Arkansas and surrounding states.  It is the only comprehensive public university located in this region.  Dedicated to teaching, research and service, the university provides students with the broad educational foundations that help develop critical thinking and analytical skills, decision-making capabilities, and communication skills.

Founded in 1909 by the Arkansas Legislature as a regional agricultural training school, it began offering a two-year college program in 1918, and then a four-year degree program began in 1930.  The Arkansas General Assembly elevated the college to university status and changed the name to Arkansas State University in 1967.  Today, the institution has more than 60,000 alumni throughout the world.  ASU will celebrate its Centennial in 2009-10.

Master’s degree graduate programs were initiated in 1955, and ASU began offering its first doctoral degree, in educational leadership, in the fall of 1992.  Today, our colleges offer four doctoral programs and 58 graduate programs at the specialist’s and master’s degree levels.  Ph.D. programs of study are offered in Environmental Science, Heritage Studies, Molecular Biosciences, and the Ed.D. program is offered through the College of Education.

Bachelor’s and associate’s degrees are available through the various colleges:  Agriculture, Business, Communications, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Nursing and Health Professions, Sciences and Mathematics and University College.

We welcome you to Arkansas State University-Jonesboro’s Fowler Center, which is affiliated with the College of Fine Arts.  Fowler Center is home of the finest artistic performances and exhibition space in the region where international, national and college performances, exhibitions, lectures and forums are offered to the public on a regular basis.
