CHERRYHOLMES

Sunday, October 11, 2009 at 2:00 p.m.

Riceland Hall, Fowler Center, 201 Olympic Dr., Jonesboro.

Bluegrass family band Cherryholmes continues to earn critical raves on their nationwide tour. The latest converts are the New York Times, who fell in love with their "molasses-thick harmonies" during a recent New York City show.

"Thrilling," "Mesmerizing," the Times exclaimed. "Cherryholmes is an extremely flexible band," capable of both "gracefully staging a [musical] conversation," and "ferocious bouts of fiddling." And though their album, 'Cherryholmes III,' is "an excellent display of fundamentals," they keep things interesting live, covering the Beatles and The Flying Burrito Brothers, and even forming a line to "jubilantly clog" dance.

More than anything, the Times fell in love with eldest Cherryholmes daughter, Cia Leigh. Praising her "firm, plaintive voice," and calling her "a strong songwriter and banjo player as well as a singer," the Times agrees with Time Out New York, who recently called her a "future star."

Grammy nominated in 2008 in the Best Bluegrass Album category for "Cherryholmes II Black and White," the second nomination in a row for the rising bluegrass stars, the album fluidly moves from heartbreaking ballads to blistering jams, featuring richly constructed songs built on effortlessly blended harmonies and masterful instrumentation, with many of the tunes sure to become future bluegrass standards. The Boston Herald raves ""Cherryholmes looks ready to blast out of the bluegrass box."

Cherryholmes, two-time-Grammy nominees and 2005 International Bluegrass Music Association's Entertainers of the Year, have spent much of the last decade on tour, and aren't stopping any time soon. Touring over 300 days a year, the road warriors will bring their "passionate, boundary-breaking expression of the bluegrass idiom" (Raleigh News & Observer) to Jonesboro Arkansas this October. Don't miss it.

Ticket prices are $30 and $20 for adults; $24 and $16 for ASU faculty and staff; $23 and $15 for senior adults and K-12 students; and $10 and $6 for ASU students.
